Domestic Hot Water - Hot Water Recovery Calculator

The purpose of the service hot water recovery calculator is to provide a tool for a refrigeration designer to use in estimating the potential energy savings of capturing heat from a refrigeration system for use in pre-heating a domestic hot water system. This tool assumes that only the superheated vapor portion of the refrigeration system's total heat of rejection will be captured with a heat recovery tank. Tank-type heat reclaim systems are one of the most common methods of heat recovery due to both their cost effectiveness and that large volumes of hot water are often consumed in supermarkets on a daily basis. This spreadsheet is intended for use by refrigeration or mechanical designers for rapid yet robust calculation of energy performance. This calculator assumes that the refrigeration input of the hot water recovery tank operates in series between the refrigeration compressor rack and condenser to capture superheat from compressors prior to condensing. This calculator also assumes that the domestic cold water supply is the only input to the hot water recovery tank and that hot water recirculation is not present or is returned to the service hot water system after the hot water recovery tank.

This spreadsheet is designed for use with the Refrigeration Playbook: Heat Reclaim report (www.nrel.gov/docs/fy15osti/63786.pdf). Please note that this calculator is not currently approved for use on Mac computers.

Outdoor Air Preheat Reclaim Module

The purpose of this Outdoor Air Preheat Reclaim Module is to allow the designer to quickly estimate the energy savings associated with reclaiming heat using an outdoor air preheat coil. This module requires HVAC and refrigeration inputs that must be obtained from other sources such as an energy model or the Space Heating Demand Module and Refrigeration System Front End.

Space Heating/Cooling Module

The purpose of this module is to assist in refrigeration heat reclaim calculations by providing hourly heating requirements for use in space heating or outdoor air preheat calculations. This module estimates space heating gains and losses relative to outdoor air temperature to calculate hourly space heating demand requirements that my be recovered via refrigeration heat reclaim. This method is intended for use for early estimation purposes only and will be more accurate for spaces with small amounts of glazing. To achieve a higher degree of accuracy, an energy model should be used to obtain these results. Yellow input fields are required inputs. Orange input fields are autocalculated and may be overwritten by the user.

Refrigeration System Front-End Spreadsheet

The purpose of the Refrigeration System Front-End Spreadsheet is to provide a tool for a mechanical designer to use for rapid, robust calculation of refrigeration system performance. The results of the spreadsheet are intended to be used with the accompanying Refrigeration Playbook spreadsheet tools for determining the feasibility of heat recovery system integration. This tool assumes that the refrigeration system being analyzed is a system with a single suction group. Condensers may be selected as air-cooled, evaporative-cooled, or hybrid with constant speed or variable speed fan control. For more complex systems, the designer may consider calculating each suction group separately and combining the results where loads and massflows are additive with a weighted average of discharge temperatures.
