With aggressive goals to reduce national energy use and carbon emissions, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will be looking to exemplary buildings that have already invested in new approaches to achieving the energy performance goals now needed at a national level. The New York Times Building, in New York, New York, incorporates a number of innovative technologies, systems and processes and could become model for widespread replication in new and existing buildings. A year-long monitored study was conducted to verify energy performance, assess occupant comfort and satisfaction with the indoor environment, and evaluate impact on maintenance and operations. Lessons learned were derived from the analysis; these lessons could help identify and shape policy, financial, or supporting strategies to accelerate diffusion in the commercial building market.

Optimization of building energy use in an urban area requires understanding of the complex interaction between urban morphology, materials, and climate, which can have unanticipated effects on urban microclimates and building energy use. Reflective pavements reduce urban air temperatures and have been proposed as a mitigation measure for urban heat islands. However, the increased solar reflectivity also transports more solar radiation into (through windows) and onto adjacent buildings possibly increasing building energy use.
The Integrated Classroom Lighting System (ICLS) delivers flexible, high-quality, energy-efficient lighting that is easy to use and maintain. ICLS system retrofits can either use existing fixture housings, only replacing lamps and ballasts, or the fixtures can be entirely replaced with a one-to-one retrofit. ICLS fixture controls, with features such as scene control, dimming, daylight harvesting, and occupancy sensing, automatically maximize energy savings while giving teachers optimal control of their classroom lighting.
